Week 4 : Knowledge Capture & Codification

On 28 of June , Friday we had our fourth lecture of TKM 1291 Introduction to Knowledge Management . So basically the topic of this lecturer was  Knowledge Capture and Codification. So before we start our class Madam asked us about our feedback regarding the field trip to Bank Negara Malaysia which was on Wed 26 of June. Then she have elaborated that our agenda and propose of the trip weren't successfully fulfilled because we were willing to try the system and how its functioning.

So we have started our lecture by  discussing the Knowledge Capture the first phase of the KM Cycle .So basically Tacit KM is the process of capturing the experience and expertise of the individual in an organization. While the capture of Explicit Knowledge is the systematic approach of capturing , organizing and refining information in a way that makes information easy to find and facilitate learning and problem solving . So we have proceed to learn about KM Tools .In order to enable the multipurpose use , the explicit knowledge need to be organized in structured document. It is known that the best KM tools create knowledge and then leverage it across multiple online channels. More Over Capturing technique using experts system  is by gathering know-how from experts . So basically the goal expert system is to extract and render explicit procedural knowledge that comprise know-how.

Then we have proceed to Tacit capture in individual and group. so actually they are three approaches to knowledge acquisition which have to us simultaneously which are :
1- Interviewing experts.
2- Learning by being told.
3- Learning by observation.

So the First Subtopic of Interviewing experts is Structured interview . Interviewer must have strong communication and conceptual skills and also know the subject , using open and close questions. Basically there are four techniques : -
1- Paraphrasing.
2- Clarifying.
3- Summarizing.
4- Reflecting.

Second subtopic of Interviewing experts is Stories. An Organizational Story can be defined as a detailed narrative of past Management actions , employee interactions, or other key events that occurred and that have been communicated informally

Then Madam have requested from us a homework which was a  handwritten summary of the storytelling of IBM  from the textbook and then passing it next tutorial class.

Then we proceed to second main topic which is Learning by being told. Which involve that interviewees express and refine their knowledge, knowledge engineers clarify and validate. and also :

1- Domain and Task analysis.
2- Process tracing and Protocol analysis.
3- Simulation.

Then we have discussed the last main topic which is Learning by Observation . which involves two expertise ( Motor-based and Cognitive expertise). so basically the idea is presenting the problem, scenario, case to solved by the experts also screen capture

Then we proceed to learn about the Knowledge Acquisition Phases. which are phases as follows :

1- Identification :-
the process of characterizing key problem aspects such as participants, resources, goals and existing reference materials.

2- Conceptualization :-
Specifying the key concepts and relationships in the form of a concept of knowledge map.

3- Codification :-
Validate content into more readily disseminate.

so we have learned the fact that converting knowledge into tangible explicit form (documents) so it can be communicated widely and less cost. so if we asked why codification because easily understood , maintained, improved upon as part of corporate memory.

Finally we have learned the four techniques of  Codification : -
1- Cognitive Mapping .
2- Decision Tree .
3- Knowledge Taxonomies.
4- Task Analysis.

Cognitive Mapping

Decision Tree

Knowledge Taxonomies

Week 4 : Tutorial 3

On 25 of June 2013 , we had our Tutorial 3 of TKM 1291 Introduction To Knowledge Management . which was about lecture 3 topic which is knowledge Management Models (KM).  So we have started discussing what is a Knowledge Management Model and how does relate to knowledge Management Life Cycle ( KMLC).  then we proceed to discuss about Nonaka and Takeuchi's Knowledge Spiral Model and then we have identified the most important processes. Then we have identified the knowledge creation process involved in some situations based on Nonaka and Takeuchi's  Model whether it is Socialization ( Tacit - to -Tacit ) ,  Externalization ( Tacit- to - Explicit ) , Combination ( Explicit - to - Explicit ) and Internalization ( Explicit - to - Tacit ). Finally we have discussed about the famous global brands  and we realize them based on our Explicit or Tacit Knowledge .  Then Madam after that conducted an activity for us as follows she first requested from us to draw MMU logo and then we compare with each other to see the difference and how our knowledge about it then she requested from us to draw something more familiar to us which was McDonalds logo and then also to compare with each other then lastly she requested from us to draw the logos and symbols that appears in our T-shirts . Finally Madam have explained to us that the result of our drawings differs and being similar with the real logos because of actually of our Tacit and Explicit Knowledge.
